Putah Creek Field Day

 ABI 198 section A (04/14/25)

Today was a successful day at Putah Creek! Most students able were able to observe their chosen species. An abundance of pictures were taken by students to potentially hone in on a research topic.

Date: April 14, 2025

Location: Putah Creek 

10:20 AM:
Students arrived at Putah Creek and gathered as a class.

10:30 AM:
A brief group discussion was held to review and share the species each student had chosen to focus on for observation.

10:40 AM – 12:20 PM:
Students spent time in the field observing their specified species. Field notes, behavioral observations, and habitat information were recorded to for potential topics. 

12:30 PM:

The class returned to campus in designated classroom. 

1:00 PM:
Back in the classroom, students voted on their top four research topics based on observations.

1:15 PM:
Students were divided into four groups, each assigned one of the top-voted topics. Groups began discussing and refining their potential research questions based on their field observations and prior knowledge.

2:00 PM:
The day concluded, with students prepared to continue developing their research questions and ideas in the next class session.

May 7th, 2025 Great job everyone for charging full speed into today's adventures! Looks like our Cahill group was able to find 4 new granaries (7 total) and our Quail Ridge group found 7 new ones (9 total), so the race to find our precious granaries is neck and neck! And a special shoutout to our satellite group for enduring the grueling technicalities of satellite imagery today, whether or not we struck gold. A lesson we learned today back in Briggs 122 was that there are TONS of ways to go about satellite imagery, with articles left and right outlining the obstacles we may face when attempting such a feat. But any progress is still progress and I feel confident that we will use what we learned today to develop a strong foundation for our image analysis. The Great Granary Quest Takes a Planning Day

 Our class meeting began with three people out inspecting Stebbins for granaries. While they were out, we began with a recap of what the three different groups found at Quail Ridge and Cahill. Once we shared our findings, it became clear: we didn’t have nearly enough granaries for the research we had imagined. Granaries, Acorns, and the Science of Getting it Right

Today was a fruitful day for all of us in Section B! Crystal, Stephanie, & Mia headed out into the field early to collect more data while the rest of us met in the Briggs Hall classroom, where Marlee – our fabulous MC for the day – led us through a group discussion.
