ABI Section 2- Day 3 Stormy Skies but Sunny Spirits!

This Friday, we started our rainy day adventure by heading over to the Davis Wetlands! Once we got there, we all gathered together and were introduced to a very creative and fun scavenger hunt activity led by our amazing  MC, Mia!

We then dispersed into groups of three and set off on our scavenger hunt! The goal of this activity was to explore different species and environments that we might want to focus on for our group project.

Despite the rain, there were so many species active in the Davis Wetlands! Using the Merlin app was super helpful for identifying the different bird species we heard chirping around us. We also observed a variety of plants and insects! There was a surprising amount of biodiversity, and it was exciting to see how alive the wetlands were in rainy conditions!

Due too the rain we rushed back to the vans and headed to our next destination: the Bypass. Once we arrived, we circled up and debriefed on the highlights from our time at the wetlands.

Some highlights including:
  • Seeing geese
  • A flock of Pelicans
  • Finding a bird egg
  • Bumble bee
  • Damsel fly
  • Tree Frog

After our debrief, we were given a second scavenger hunt! This time it had a point system!

Note: In the first hunt, each specie found counted as one point.

For this second hunt, each task had different point values and included more multi-step, critical-thinking questions! This location had a lot of bird activity around the ponds and also many mosquitoes, along with small holes scattered throughout the mud.

After about 40 minutes of scavenger hunting, we regrouped and moved on to our final site in the Bypass. At this last location, we found even more insects and frogs, along with many dead crustaceans!

Finally, we all came together one last time to debrief, sharing what we found and going over the plan for Tuesday’s class.
